If the dialogue is where the self is revealed, then perhaps, in order to be yourself, it is essential to maintain the integrity of one voice. If the dialogue is where the self is revealed, then perhaps, in order to be yourself, it is essential that the image and the being be one. If the dialogue is where the self is revealed, perhaps the merging of the person I think I am, the person I present to my family, friends and adversaries, and the person I present to the public - the merging of these images into one voice - reveals a profound presence of self. If the dialogue is where the self is revealed, perhaps the promise of our autonomy would be fulfilled if we were to create for ourselves one voice, a rational and ethical alternative to the persistent worrisome internal dialogue and to the many persuasions we speak and to which we listen. |
