Fire Season

I watched the sun turn blood red
In this smoke-filled Colorado sky
The fires continue to burn
Out of control
Uncontained
Renegade
Consuming the countryside
It reminded me of how we burned
Out of control for one another
The room filled with the heady
Smell of us
In love
And free
I remember how you told me
You'd never leave
And you filled me with joy
Your words were the rivers
Refreshing my body
When you left
You left me dry
And the fires rage on inside
With nothing to staunch their hot
Onslaught
Of pain
Smoke and tears sting my eyes
As you burn my heart
To ashes
