The Goodbye

Let me write!
Let me remember this night!
Let me remember this gentle farewell.

Remember what you wore
Remember that pendent
That gift from so long ago,
     once again hanging from your neck
Let me engrave your eyes in my memory
They were laughing!  Stars.  Exploding.  Supernovas in ebony seas.

Two travelers parting
Two roads calling
Two bittersweet smiles
     With nothing standing between them
     Save the untraveled roads
     And the unlived years
     And the tempered glass window
          of her car

Two lovers saying goodbye
Two wayward souls
Saying "Never"
Saying "Always"

One last kiss
Then a clear Winter's night,
and nothing more.
