Ashes When the ashes finally settle And the burning fire of love cools Only the stale embers of memory remain From a distance they look black Covered with the remnants of time And scarred by emotions of lost chances They neither invite nor appeal Only the core of their fiber surviving Not nearly enough for warmth or comfort Yet somehow they rekindle The searing heat of passion Finds their center unharmed I knew this once It was a glance across a room Glimmering eyes that knew how to take chances Setting the heart racing Fueling flames of desire Nothing else mattered nor did I care It was just one of those things Ashes leftover from another life Always the promise of tomorrow |
