one can see a long way off
from this balcony
180 degrees around
eighteen stories down and
nearly all
of twinkling toronto
the nighttime black
past
queen's quay
and further south
almost
it seems
to the states
and blinking neon
announcing cheap smokes
and sentences that don't
mostly end
in "eh?"
and broken hearts in
detroit
sad girls in duluth dreaming
of LA
the vast beautiful wastes of
nevada
nuclear test sites abandoned
to time
and dust
and the inevitable fade
of history
the sparkling misery
of vegas
and down east as well
to the blistered and busted
in the bowery
new yawk
home no more
(add another place to the
list)
and the roar
of niagara
where from here
on a clear enough day
you really can see
the rising
mists
