The Very Last Dance


I’ve danced this dance
a time or two
in the middle of the night
but not with you

i’ve done it all
and it felt the same
as I held your hand
and felt the pain
        
to pirouette
in this old man’s dream
and we danced this dance
but it’s not what it seemed

I held you close                                                  
as we danced so slow
and i kissed your cheek
for that one last time

and your breath turned cold
….. against my neck
as the spectre of death
called out your name
                                                        
because I’ve danced this dance
with these shadows of mine
now I’ll dance it alone
this one last time
